Choosing a midwife or doctor

Choosing who will attend your pregnancy and birth is a big decision.  And even when a pregnancy is planned, wanted, anticipated and welcomed with open arms, the reality of it can be daunting and can seem sudden.

Dealing with the first symptoms of pregnancy can be more stressful if you haven't chosen a care provider.  It is also good to know that there are genetic tests available early in pregnancy (8-12 weeks) that cannot be offered later.

Some advice for choosing a midwife:

Take your time.  There is no reason not to see your regular doctor for the early pregnancy visits while you explore your options.  Make appointments to visit with several care providers to get an idea of what you want. This process should not add to your stress, it should be fun!

Some questions to ask the midwives:

Where did you train?  What specialties do you have?

How much time do you typically spend with women at prenatal visits?  the birth?  What is your schedule of postpartum care?

Who else will be involved in my care? (students, nurses, other staff)

Some questions to ask yourself:

Do I feel comfortable with their practices - including all of the people who may be involved in my care?

Do I feel listened to? Heard?

Does this person share my view of pregnancy and health?

Do I trust this person?  Do I feel respected?
