Jane Peterson, LM

I was a senior in college when I first found out about midwives and homebirth and it was an instant attraction.

Substantial time spent in the library soon showed me that homebirth wasn’t just an awesome way to begin a family, but a well-researched, safe, evidence-based way to have a baby.  Finding out that one of the best regarded midwifery schools in the country was nearby in Seattle was the icing on the cake.

I am passionate about providing the one-on-one care that every woman deserves.  Being a midwife lets me make a positive difference in the world, one woman, one baby, one family at a time.

Jane Peterson has a bachelor's degree in molecular biology and biochemistry from Western Washington University.  She has lived in Washington for more than 25 years, and attended Seattle Midwifery School for her doula and midwife education.

The first time I heard about home birth, I knew my babies would be born at home.  The more I learned about midwifery, the more it appealed to me.  Providing personal, holistic prenatal care and sensitive, supportive labor, birth and postpartum care is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done—second only to my own journey down that path.  My two beautiful children were born at home, with the care of fabulous midwives.

I have always enjoyed learning – an honor student all the way through my college education.  But when my son was born, I learned a whole new way of learning.  From the labor and birth, to discovering all it takes to parent a newborn – I was wonderfully overwhelmed with the transformative nature of my new education.  It was then that my midwifery education.  But there was more to come.  Midwifery school itself is a transformative, whole-body, whole-self experience.  Academic & practical, emotional & intellectual, thousands of hours and more than 100 labors—comprehensive, to say the least.  I learned that women are strong; that babies come out; that families are born; that babies are magical;  that coffee is good but sleep is better; that medical science has value, but that other modalities do too; that we know a lot, but have more yet to learn.  My confidence grew, but not more than my humility – knowing what we don’t know is the most important skill.  My education complete, or so I thought.

Pregnant a second time, now as a midwife, and my learning began anew.  My daughter’s birth was so different from my son’s, but ended in a joy compounded by the memories of my first moments with him.  My education continues, as my children teach me more each day and my clients’ experiences enrich my clinical skills.  I am grateful for, and feel blessed by each of these influences in my life.

Kristin Rogers has a bachelor’s degree in history, with honors, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.  In a former life, she wanted to be a lawyer and still enjoys a good debate.

After college, she lived in Ireland for a time, where she met and married her husband.  In 2002, they relocated to the Seattle area to be near to her family for their first child and to attend the Seattle Midwifery School.
