Early Pregnancy Health

Congratulations!  You’re pregnant!  You probably have lots of questions.  You may also be surprised at how quickly you begin to experience pregnancy symptoms.  While these vary considerably, it can be reassuring to know that the symptoms are generally caused by the same hormones that ensure a healthy pregnancy.  Here are some tips to help until you can see your midwife:

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal 'twinges' are normal.  As the uterus begins to expand, the ligaments holding it in place begin to stretch and this can be uncomfortable.

However abdominal PAIN is not normal.  If you experience:

  • sharp, steady pain OR

  • pain that is rythmic or throbbing OR

  • significant pain that is always on one side - please contact your midwife or doctor.
